As his friend Desmond said,  “Evans loved Cindy. I remember the day they met at Reggaefest. He talked about her all night. He loved having Gena in his life. He talked about how he wants to bring Hillary to the states to join the 3 of them.”

Evans and Cindy had only recently been married in August of 2015 when he was diagnosed with Leukemia that September. Over the following months, Cindy would remain devoted to caring for her husband both in and out of the hospital, while working to provide for her daughter. Cindy was a consistent foundation of strength, optimism, and good nature throughout Evans’ illness.

When he learned of Evans’ passing, Cindy’s Uncle wrote this poem. It was read by Cindy during the funeral ceremony.

Once we had a love, a love that was young and free
I found the one I wanted to be with, it was just you and me
Together we were a ship, traveling around the ocean
Going anywhere we wanted to, our lives set in motion
Then one day it hit us, the storm, it came
We were not ready for this, it was supposed to be tame
We got tossed about the ocean, like a feather in the wind
This struggle we were going through, me, you—my best friend
What about what we wanted, what about our plan
Could our ship make it through it, together, I know we can
The wind picked up and started to blow, the storm got so strong
Could we hold up against it, if so, for how long
We started yelling at him, why all the wind, waves and the rain
Why God why did you do this to us, all the tears, heartache and the pain
Right now I find no answer, to the Lord, I asked the question
How do I go on from this, and what is the lesson?
You know I’m going to scream at you, why is it meant to be
Why is he gone from here, and why did you take him from me
There is one question I will fail to ask, But I know that you will do
Wrap your arms around me Lord, hold me tight, so I can feel you
I know you are with me, but yet I feel so alone
And that he is with you now, in a better place called home
We were like a tiny ship, with a love that was so young
All our boards stayed together, even though a storm so strong
It didn’t matter what was thrown at us, I love you and my heart will mend
Please watch over me now, until we meet…. again.
